Missions

MARK 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Usually, when we think of missions we think of the Great Commission. But missions didn’t begin with the Great Commission. Missions began with God. It first beat in His heart before it was ever breathed as the life sustaining force into His church.

A strong missions program rests on these three foundations:

I. A Compassionate God
Our God is missions-minded. If He were not, there would be no Christian mission.

II. A Compelling Message
In Romans 1:14-16, Paul declares that he is indebted to God to give the world the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Having heard the greatest message in the world, He was compelled to share it with whomever he could. So great was this sense of obligation that Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:16, "Yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the Gospel!" The Gospel He has given us is a missions message. If it could not save every sinner, there would be no reason to take it to every nation.

III. A Commissioned Church – Mark 16:15
And the Great Commission is a missions mandate. It identifies the local church as the center for world evangelism.

THE SUBMISSIVE ONE

OUTLINE OF RUTH

The Book of Ruth is more than history, and it is not a biography. It is a true story. It has a domestic nature to it, and it brings us up to an understanding of the lineage of King David from whom has come our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
This story takes place in the days of the Judges, believed to be in a time when a great famine was within the land some sixty years of so before the birth of David.
This is one of the two books in the Bible that are named after women and have women as the principle characters. It receives its name from Ruth, the Moabitess who married Boaz, from whom came David the king.

It is believed to have been written by Samuel the prophet, and it is properly placed between the Book of Judges and the Book of I Samuel as it introduces us to David from whom came Christ.

“The Book of Ruth relates not miracles nor laws, wars nor victories, nor the revolutions of states, but the affliction first and afterwards the comfort of Naomi, the conversion first and afterwards the preferment of Ruth. Many such events have happened, which perhaps we may think as well worthy to be recorded; but these God saw fit to transmit the knowledge of to us; and even common historians think they have liberty to choose their subject.

The design of this book is:

I. To lead to providence, to show us how conversant it is about our private concerns, and to teach us in them all to have an eye to it, acknowledging God in all our ways and in all events that concerns us. I Sam. 2:7—8; Psa. 113:7—9

II. To lead to Christ, who descended from Ruth, and part of whose genealogy concludes the book, whence it is fetched into Matt. 1. In the conversion of Ruth the Moabitess, and the bringing of her into the pedigree of the Messiah, we have a type of the calling of the Gentiles in due time into the fellowship of Christ Jesus our Lord.

The afflictions of Naomi and Ruth we have an account of in chapter 1.
Instances of their industry and humility we have an account of in chapter 2.
The bringing of them into an alliance with Boaz we have an account of in chapter 3.
And their happy settlement thereby we have an account of in chapter 4.

“And let us remember the scene is laid in Bethlehem, the city where our Redeemer was born.” Matthew Henry Commentary

FIVE FACES OF FAITH

Our faith in the Lord is the staff of life for the believer. Without faith, we cannot grow in the Lord, and we certainly cannot please Him, Heb.11:6; Rom.14:23. Faith is essential! Faith is the assurance that God will do what He has said He will do - Rom.4:21. Faith, then, is best summed up by Heb.11:1; "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

I. CONVERTING FAITH

This is the type of faith that saves the soul - it is all that is required - Acts 16:31 This is eternal faith -

II. CHANGING FAITH

This type of faith helps us to live holy lives - This faith helps us to trust in Jesus for direction And helps us walk each day in His will -

III. CONTENDING FAITH

This type of faith makes us seek God for others and believe God will move in their lives.

IV. COMFORTING FAITH

This type of faith reminds us that God is still in control - Rom.8:28 This faith deals a death blow to our fears -

V. CONQUERING FAITH

This type of faith destroys any obstacle that arises in our lives it reminds us that God is still the Lord! This faith gives us the victory in any situation -

Reading God's Word Develops Faith

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

Many in this day are basing their faith on experience. It is not safe to build one’s faith on feeling or something that happened to us. The devil is very subtle and deceptive, and has led away a multitude in this way.

D. L. Moody said, “For years I prayed for faith and thought that someday faith would come down and strike me like lightening, but faith did not seem to come, then one day I read Romans 10:17.”

1. It is the avenue through which we are saved.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8,9)

2. When faith is developed it will please God.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6)

3. It will quench the fiery darts of the wicked.

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” (Ephesians 6:16)

4. It is the condition of answered prayer.

"And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” (Matthew 21:22)

The Incorruptible Seed

a. The Incorruptible Seed Brings Incorruptible Life

1 John 5:9-11 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
2 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Psalms 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.
Psalms 119:93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

b. The Incorruptible Seed Brings The Indwelling Holy Ghost

Galatians 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

c. The Incorruptible Seed Keeps The Saint Incorruptible

1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

d. The Incorruptible Seed Brings Life More Abundantly

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

e. The Incorruptible Seed Meets Our Every Need

Psalms 19:7-10 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are the than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

WHAT DOTH HINDER ME TO BE BAPTIZED?

Acts 8:26-39

This is another account of the Bible Principle of one won by one. We find five essentials for leading a soul to Christ. The five essentials are:

1. A Wanting Sinner. vs. 27

And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship
Rom. 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God
Ecc. 7:20 “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.”
Part of the reason why we are not seeing people saved is that they do not believe they are sinners. It is absolutely essential that they understand they are sinners. Our sinner in this passage was a rich and important man in the Ethiopian kingdom but before the day was over, he saw himself lost and on his way to hell.

2. A Willing Servant vs. 30

And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?”
Philip was man who was convinced that men were lost. Too many times, we pray “Lord, make me a soul winner.” but we are unwilling to give the Gospel to those who God places in our path.
Pro. 11:30 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.”Dan. 12:3 “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.”

3. The Written Scriptures. vs. 30

And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?”
Rom. 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
2 Tim. 3:15 “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
It is not just any ordinary scripture passage that this man was reading. He was reading Isa. 53:7-8.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.”
What passage this is. It tells the Gospel story and the mission of our Saviour so plain. In fact, many Jewish Bibles do not have this in them because the Jewish rabbis are afraid of the truth that is found there. When you reflect of what it cost for our salvation, it should be bring joy to our hearts and a praise to our lips.

4. A Witnessing Spirit. vs. 29

Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.”
John 3:5-8 “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”
When a man, woman, boy or girl is under conviction, it is the Holy Spirit that is dealing with them. If you are saved today, then it will be the Holy Spirit that will draw you.

5. The Wonderful Saviour. vs. 35

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.”
Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus went to Calvary just for the express purpose to save men, women, boys and girls. Remember what Luke 19:10 said “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Steps of a Good Man

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD" (Psalm 37:23)

We step so carelessly, never giving much thought to where our soles will land next. We assume we are walking in the right path because everything seems to be going fine, or we assume we are off course because everything seems to be going wrong.

Both assumptions may be wrong – the point is have we prayed enough? "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." (Proverbs 14:12).

You see there is no casual or careless nature to our Savior. While on earth He never went anywhere He did not intend to go – every destination was divinely ordered and every step precise. Oh that we would walk the same!

In today’s devotion ask; When was the last time you and I waited to move until we received our new marching orders? Hear again the admonition of Paul: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer…." (Philippians 4:6).

Dear friends in the faith, watch where you step today.

David's Anger

I Samuel 25:4-13,21

This passage gives us the story of David and Nabal. We all deal with anger sometimes. Everyone, great or small, gets angry sometimes. Here's a story of a great hero who got angry, very angry.

1. David's Anger was Unlikely.
This was not what you'd expect from a man after God's own heart. You'd think he'd be more forgiving. He showed great patience with Saul, but blew up when Nabal was rude to him. Do people expect you to get angry, or is it unlikely?

2. David's Anger was Unjustified.
They had never come to an agreement. Nabal never agreed to pay David. David did something nice that he wasn't obligated to do, and then expected to be paid for it. Our anger is very often very stupid and unjustified.

3. David's Anger was Unreasonable.
He was going to kill him and everybody and everything, down to the last dog. David took four hundred armed soldiers with him just to get even with someone who was rude to him. Pretty unreasonable. Prov. 27:4 "Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous..." A lot of times when people get angry it is something that won't matter at all in about 5 minutes.

4. David's Anger was Unacceptable.
This vicious unreasonable, unforgiving anger was probably based mostly on pride, which God HATES. There was no excuse that David could give that would make this seem justified. Anger cannot become acceptable in the Christian's life.

5. David's Anger was Unpleasant.
No one wants to be around an angry person. Proverbs 17:1 "Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife. " Proverbs 21:19 "It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. "

Be slow to anger:
Proverbs 14:17 "He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated."
Proverbs 16:32 "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city."
James 1:19-20 "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God."
Our anger is never a part of the righteousness of God. Our anger is not a part of His plan.

David's anger was turned by the reasoning of Abigail. When anger starts to enter your heart, think of how foolish it is to be ruled by anger. Ask God to help you understand how to handle the problem without getting angry.

Calls That Hinder God’s Work

Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

I. The Call of Family

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

II. The Call of Fun

Hebrews 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

III. The Call of Faintheartedness

Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Deuteronomy 8:2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
Acts 16:23-24 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

IV. The Call of Finances

Hebrews 11:24-26 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

V. The Call of Faithlessness

Mark 5:35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
Matthew 13:58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

UNDER CONTROL

Pr 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

There are times in our lives that we just feel hopeless and helpless. I am no different than any other person that is trying to live for God and do right, sometimes things just get to the point that we cannot control them.

We want to take control and make things better, we want to make things work, but sometimes, all that we do is not enough or just makes things worse.

It is easy to use religious clichés and say things we have heard, but these times are very real and they are very fearful. These confusing and fearful times are some of the most dangerous times in our lives.

It is in these times the Devil will hide from us the things and the facts we need to survive spiritually. He will hide God’s past blessings, he will hide the great truth of God’s Word and he will hide plain common sense from us.

I have seen people get to these times in their lives and throw away everything they have worked many years to obtain. Some throw away their Christian testimonies, some throw away their ministries, some throw away the will of God for their lives and some even throw away their families and their homes.

1 - GOD HAS IT UNDER CONTROL IN TIMES OF DANGER

2 - GOD HAS IT UNDER CONTROL IN TIMES OF DISEASE

3 - GOD HAS IT UNDER CONTROL IN DEFEAT

4 - GOD HAS IT UNDER CONTROL IN DIFFICULTIES

5 - GOD HAS IT UNDER CONTROL IN DISAGREEMENTS

6 - GOD HAS IT UNDER CONTROL IN DISAPPOINTMENT

7 - GOD IS IN CONTROL IN DISAPPROVAL

8 - GOD HAS IT UNDER CONTROL IN DISCIPLINE

9 - GOD IS IN CONTROL IN DISGRACE

10 - GOD IS IN CONTROL IN DEATH

Jesus Only

Matthew 17:8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

People today are having a hard time seeing the Lord. There's too much going on, too much competition and too many people and things clamoring for attention. The Inner Circle in this story finally got to the place where they saw no man, except Jesus. How did this come about?

1. Elevation – vs. 1 "And after six days, Jesus...bringeth them up..."
This is a picture of salvation because:
a. After six days, they were entering into His rest. (they even slept) see the Luke account
b. He raised them up to sit together in heavenly places.
c. He brought them up, they didn't go up by themselves.

2. Sanctification – vs. 1 "...apart..." He took them OUT OF THE WORLD!
Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

3. Transfiguration – vs. 2 "...and was transfigured..."
Their perception of Jesus CHANGED! They saw him in a different light!
To the world, he was despised and rejected; to them, he was beautiful!
To the world, the OT Tabernacle was ugly with badgers skins on the outside, but on the inside, it was decorated with gold and embroidered works and scarlet and blue and purple.... You'll never see Jesus only until you see him like He really is!!!

4. Association – vs. 3 "there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him."
A major obstacle to people seeing Jesus only is the people they associate with. After spending some time with Jesus and HIS friends, they didn't see their friends anymore!! So who is Jesus' friends?
John 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

5. Exhilaration – vs. "...Lord, it is good for us to be here..."
You'll never see the Lord if you're always wanting to be somewhere else!!
Psalms 17:15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

6. Motivation – vs. 4 "... let us make here three tabernacles.."
a. To Work – building three tabernacles would require some serious effort!
b. To Witness – the tabernacles would be a constant reminder of the experience
c. To Worship – they were prepared to do some serious worshipping!!

7. Illumination – vs. 5 "...a bright cloud overshadowed them..."
They received illumination concerning:
a. His Person – confirmation that Jesus was exactly who He had said he was!
b. His Pleasure – they learned that God was only pleased with what Jesus did
c. His Proclamations – they realized that what Jesus said was the Word of God!

8. Humiliation – vs. 6 "...they fell on their face..."
Pride hinders the blessings of God
Pride hinders your joy in Jesus
Pride blinds us to His true being.
Pride robs us of the delight we can experience

9. Realization - vs. 6 "...and were sore afraid."
They realized that this wasn't just one of the guys. This wasn't just a religion.
This wasn't just somebody's idea of how to do things.
This was GOD in the flesh!
This was God's way and God's plan.

When they realized all of that, they didn't see anybody else!!

Search The Scriptures

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

One of the biggest problems today is there is not enough searching the scriptures. It is because of this neglect that we have false religions, false doctrines, false teachers and unbelievers. This matter of searching the scriptures is far more important than many people, even believers realize. Let us examine the two instances in the Bible where we find this phrase.

In both places, these verses are referring to UNBELIEVERS.

In Acts, the unbelievers WANTED to search.
In John, they were WARNED to search.

In Acts, the preaching made them HUNGRY.
In John, the preaching made them HATEFUL – 5:18 …the Jews sought the more to kill him…

In Acts, the crowd was SERIOUS about the word.
In John, the crowd was SKEPTICAL of the word.

Christians are commanded to study the scriptures; II Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved”

Greek word for STUDY is spoudazo which means to exert one’s self, endeavour, give diligence

Unbelievers are commanded to search the scriptures.

Greek word for SEARCH is ereunao which means ‘examine into’.

In John 5, Jesus is talking to a bunch of Jews that wanted to KILL him. (vs. 16,18) He turned and preached to them a powerful message, powerful enough to convince anybody that had an open mind. His message was very simply along these lines:

1. His Identity had been proven by his Person – vs.19-21
2. His Identity had been proven by his Power – vs. 24-30
3. His Identity had been proven by his Preaching – vs. 31-35
4. His Identity had been proven by his Proclamations – vs. 37-47

He told them that they THINK they have eternal life, but if they searched the scriptures, they would find out that they DID NOT have eternal life.

Their FALSE PROFESSION was based on an FALSE PERCEPTION of the scriptures!!!

A Stirred Spirit

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Acts 17:16

Paul’s spirit was stirred:
While he was waiting – Athens wasn’t even his final destination or his hometown
While you are waiting on God’s direction for your life, how do you spend your time?
While he was watching – a right spirit will be stirred by error; his eye affected his heart

What are you looking at? When you look at your city, what do you see?

Some sure signs of a stirred spirit are:

I. Disputing with those in false doctrine – vs. 17

disputing: - to think different things with one’s self, mingle thought with thought to ponder, revolve in mind, to converse, discourse with one, argue, discuss

II. Devout people that are in error won’t intimidate you – vs. 17

devout: – religious but lost worshippers (example: John 4:22)

III. Daily you will be found witnessing in the public places – vs. 17

market: - Any collection of men, congregation, or assembly, especially of the people the place of assembly; for public debating, for elections; for trials; for buying and selling; for all kinds of business; market place, street that met with him: - to chance to be by, to happen to be present, to meet by chance

IV. Doctrine will be your main emphasis – vs. 19

John 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

V. Discerning the problem of others – vs. 22

perceive: - to be a spectator, look at, behold; to view attentively, take a view of, survey; to view mentally, consider; to see; to perceive with the eyes, to enjoy the presence of one; to discern, descry; to ascertain, find out by seeing

VI. Defining people’s problems with boldness – vs. 22

“…in all things ye are too superstitious.” Paul wasn’t afraid to confront them about their error.

VII. Describing the error of their devotion – vs. 23

I beheld your devotions…him ye ignorantly worship…”

VIII. Declaring the truth unto them – vs. 23

He spent the rest of his time preaching truth to them. Some believed, some mocked and some procrastinated.

Paul’s vision for this city stirred his spirit. Is your spirit stirred for your city??

SEPARATION

2 Corinthians 6:17&18 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

1. Separation from Conformity.

a. Moral standards.
b. Entertainment. Psa. 37:4.
c. Social life.

2. Separation from Compromise.

a. In our individual lives.
b. In the home.
c. In the church.

3. Separation from Condemnation.

a. Condemned men die. Rom. 6:23.
b. Jesus died for condemned men. Rom. 5:8.
c. Condemned men can be saved. Rom. 6:23; 8:1.

THE RIGHT ROAD.

Mt 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

No one can run on two roads at the same time. The greatest problem in churches today is to get the members to stay on the right road. We must choose the right road.

A lot or religious runners are running on the wrong road today.

SOME WRONG ROADS ARE:

A. The Road Of “Good Intentions.

They mean well – they intended to do certain things for God – but never got around to it. The road to Hell is paved with “good intentions”.

B. The Road Of Religiosity.

James deals with religion - Jas 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Successful religion is: A bridled tongue – Actively ministering to the orphans and widows – and to live holy. Most people who are religious practice religion expecting their religion to take them to Heaven. That’s the wrong road.

C. The Road Of Good Works.

Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

I would estimate that at least 90% of people who claim to be religious would believe that salvation comes from things they do. Or good works. That is the devil’s lie. If he can cause people to think they are saved by their own doing then all that believe that will go to hell.

SOME RIGHT ROADS ARE:

D. The Road Of Obedience.

Doing what is right and keeping on doing it. Following the will and work of God.

E. The Road Of Faith.

Ro 14:23 ….. for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Living by faith – working by faith – giving by faith – daily operating in faith. The road of faith is a right road.

F. Holy Living.

We are commanded to live holy lives for the honor and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Danger of No Vision

Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish:”

The Danger of No Vision – the people perish!

Prime example: the children of Israel, wandering in the wilderness after seeing Canaan.

A. No Purpose in Life - live just to please self; only what is fun, necessary, etc.

•The wilderness was a path to the purpose; it wasn’t the purpose of their deliverance.
•They woke up every morning and started walking, but where were they going?
•They didn’t want to go to Canaan. They couldn’t go back to Egypt. Where were they going???

B. No Plan in Life - just take one day at a time; what will happen will happen

•God had a plan for them. It is revealed in Exodus 3:8
•They mistook the pillar of fire and cloud that was with them as confirmation of God’s will.
•Never mistake God’s presence for God’s plan!!!!
•He said he’d never leave us or forsake us; even if we are out of his will.
•Don’t settle for the Pillars of God when you can have the Plan of God!

C. No Passion in Life – if you have no passion, you will not have any desires

•Their passions were centered around themselves.
•They couldn’t stop bellyaching about what they wanted and what they needed and what they had when they were in Egypt.
•They had no passion for an abundant life both for themselves and their children.
•Their passion was SELF!!!

D. No Problems in Life – the devil doesn’t fight dead people!!

•Where there’s no vision, there’s no opposition.
•God’s plan for them involved a land flowing with milk and honey, but it also involved battles, giants and walled cities.
•Their lack of vision resulted in a lack of problems.
•Does the thought of battles scare you?
•Does the thought of opposition dampen your vision for yourself and for your family?

His Positioning Of Us.

Ps 23:1-3 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

He positions us for rest.

It’s not easy to get a sheep to lie down. A strange thing about sheep is that they will refuse to lie down unless four requirements are met. (1) They must be free from all fear. (2) There must be no tension between members of the flock. (3) They must not be aggravated with flies or parasites. (4) And they must be free from hunger.

He positions us for refreshment.

Sheep are poor swimmers. Their thick coats will cause them to drown once they get wet. For this reason, sheep will not drink from moving water.........if a shepherd comes to moving water, he will not force the sheep to drink from it, but instead will dam up a small portion of it so to provide them with "still waters" that they can, and will drink from.

Jesus made it clear that the thirsty souls of men and women can only be fully satisfied by coming to him. In John 7:37, he stated, "If any man thirsts, let him come to me and drink." Our Shepherd leads us beside the still waters.

He positions us by restoring us.

There is an Old English shepherd’s term called a "cast" sheep. This is a sheep that has turned over on its back and can’t get back up again. It happens frequently. And when it happens, all the sheep can do is lie on its back, with its feet flaying frantically in the air. Sometimes it will bleat, but usually it will just kick.

If the shepherd doesn’t arrive within a short time, the sheep will die. That’s one of the reasons why a shepherd is always looking over its flock, counting them to see if they are all on their feet. If one is missing, he thinks, "One of my sheep is cast and I’ve got to find it." This is the thought behind the parable of the 99 sheep and the one that went astray.

Many times a shepherd will search for hours for a single sheep, only to find it on its back, lying helpless. He will turn the sheep over on its side, rub its legs to restore circulation, then lift it to its feet. After a while the sheep will stumble and stagger, and then eventually walk steadily and surely.

That’s probably what David had in mind when he said, "He restoreth my soul" because that’s how our Lord treats us. We stumble and fall, we become so helpless. And yet our shepherd is patient and tender and helpful in getting us back on our feet.

I read the gospels and see the tenderness that Jesus showed toward sinners. I see how he restored Peter’s heart after his denial. And I understand that Jesus also restores my soul.

Soldier

2Tim 2:3-4 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

Endure hardness.”

1. Soldier’s Strength (Zechariah 4:6 Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.).

2. Soldier’s Strategy (Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places).

He must endure suffering (vs. 3).
He must endure separation (vs. 4) “entangleth.”

3. Soldier’s Spiritual Armour.

* Girdle of Truth – Truth destroys falsehood.
* Breastplate of Righteousness – It covers vital organs. We must guard the principles we believe in.
* Feet shod with Gospel- We must deliver the gospel message.
* Shield of Faith – Faith to see beyond that which is seen.
* Helmet of Salvation - Thinking power must be protected.
* Sword of the Spirit - Word of God is indispensable.

4. Soldiers Character

* One who is Chosen (vs 4).
* One who has a Commander – Recognizes authority (vs. 3-4).
* One who obeys Commands – Experiences warfare.
* One who serves his Country. We are citizens of another country (Heaven)
* One who is Cautious (vs 4) “Affairs.”
* One who has a Charge (4:1-5).
* One who is Crowned ( vs. 6).

5. Soldier must have:

* Fortitude to stand – “Endure Hardness” (vs. 3).
* Freedom to serve – “Entanglements” (vs. 4).
* Faithfulness to the Saviour – “To please Him” (vs. 4).

6. Soldiers have seven orders.

1. Arm ( Ephesians 6; 1 Peter 4:1). “Arm yourselves.”
2. Fight ( 1 Timothy 6:12). “Fight the good fight of faith.”
3. Resist ( James 4:7). “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
4. Stand ( Ephesians 6:14). “Stand therefore having your loins girt about With truth.”
5. Watch ( 1 Peter 5:8). “Be sober, be vigilant because your adversary the devil.”
6. Endure ( 2 Timothy 4:5). “Endure afflictions.”
7. Be Strong ( 2 Timothy 2:1). “Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus,” ( Ephesians 6:10) “Finally Be Strong In The Lord”.

MAKE-BELIEVER

Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

A. Characteristics of the make-believer

Luke 18:9-14 “And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”
You see it in the Pious Prayers of the Pharisee pictured in this parable of our Lord Jesus. He thought since that he did all of these rituals that he was right with God. He had the outside cleaned up but his pious prayer portrayed that there was an inward problem and that was he was a make-believer.
He was full of pride. It would take an entire message to deal with the sin of pride. God hates pride in any form. Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”

B. Conduct exhibited by the make-believer

He is religious. He has a form of godliness but no power to overcome sin in his own life. Many times he will ridicule of the real thing. He thinks that a man needs to reform his ways and will do any thing to help him reform. Reformation is like a family bringing a pig into their house. They give him a bath in lavender. They spoon-feed him. They give him a comfortable bed in which to sleep. But let it rain and a big mud puddle forms outside and the door is left open, that pig will make a mad dash for the mud puddle. Why? It is his nature to do so. This is a good illustration of waste of time reformation is. You have to see a change from the inside to the out before real change is possible.

C. Command to the make-believer is the same to the unbeliever because he or she is in reality an unbeliever. The command is to REPENT OR PERISH.

Luke 13:3,5 “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
Revelation 21:8 “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Let me give a couple Bible example of a Make-Believer in the New Testament. In the book of Acts chapter eight we find a man by the name of Simon. Simon believed with his head but it never changed his life. He wanted to be able to bewitch folks as he did before he made his profession of faith and was baptized. Peter plainly told him that he needed to repent, a change of mind and direction. Many people in churches today are Make-believers. They know it and God knows it. It is hard to swallow their pride and repent of their sin and truly trust Christ into their hearts.
One more classic example of a make-believer was Judas Iscariot. He walked with the Lord Jesus for three years. He saw all the miracles. He heard all the words of our Lord Jesus yet he never repented and had a heart change.

We live in a messed up world

Consider These 3 Thoughts

(1) Zero Gravity

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside-down, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 C.
The Russians used a pencil. Your taxes are due again--enjoy paying them.

(2) Our Constitution

"They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, and it's worked for over 200 years. And, we're not using it anymore."

(3) Ten Commandments

The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a Courthouse is that you cannot post "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery" and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians.
It creates a hostile work environment.

Focus of Paul's Preaching

Act 20:21-25 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

Paul declared to these Ephesian elders His manner of preaching.
His preaching involved three things:

1st thing Paul's preaching involved is Jesus – Vs. 21: All true preaching is Christ-centred preaching!

* There is no other message, but Christ and Him crucified. Paul said in 1 Cor. 2:1-2 “And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”
* Why is Christ-centred preaching so important? Acts 4:12 – “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” John 14:6 – “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
* A real man will have a Christ-cantered witness. He will witness to others about the life-changing power of Christ. 1 Peter 3:15 – “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” We are definitely a witness with our lives, but even as good as that is, it still takes the communication of God’s Word to save men’s souls!

2nd thing involved in Paul’s preaching was Joy – Vs. 24: Paul proclaimed a message of Joy.

* This joy was not just in the wonderful message of Salvation, but also with and in service to the LORD!
* This Joy is not dependent on circumstances, because it is not founded on circumstances, but is in the LORD! Paul found it a joy to live and serve God as he proclaims His Word!
* Christian, the message God has given us to proclaim is one of Joy!
It brings hope to the troubled heart! But how sweet it is when delivered by one who delights in the God of the message.

3rd thing involved in Paul’s preaching was a Journey – Vs. 25: Paul was preaching his farewell message to them.

* Paul in many of his writings compares this life to a journey each man must take. The destination depends on US!
Paul would soon finish his journey and when he did he desired to have God’s smile on his life. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 – “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
The message we proclaim should also speak of life’s journey and the possible destinations this journey can take. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Mat 7:13-14).

Humility

Mt 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Why Humility is Vital to Great Leadership

Quickly think of five common traits of high-impact leaders… good time management, assertiveness, drive, energy, charisma, etc. Humility rarely lands in the list when it comes to our modern, management systems. But Jesus (the greatest leader ever) and Moses (perhaps the second) had this one thought in mind – great leaders don’t have power over people, but power under people by way of humility.

Humility may be a forgotten virtue in conversations about leadership today, but I believe it’s absolutely essential to having long-term impact on people's lives.

Here are some reasons why…
1. Until you can be managed well, you can’t manage well, and being managed definitely requires humility.
2. You’re not leading well until you put the needs of others before your own, which requires humility.
3. You won’t invest time into others until you realize you’re not the center of the universe.
4. You won’t be a learner without humility, so you’ll stagnate and die on the vine.
5. You can’t be a listener without humility, and when you don’t listen, you’ll miss some vitally important feedback.
6. Receiving and making the most of constructive criticism definitely demands humility.
7. Being concerned about the personal welfare of others requires humility.
8. You won’t improve unless you realize your need for it, which requires humility.
9. You can’t be sensitive to what’s going on the behind the words of others unless you’re paying attention, which requires humility.
10. The respect you think others have for you will merely be an illusion unless you’re humble enough to see the reality of your own weaknesses.

Humility isn’t feeling bad, down, or low about yourself. Rather, humility is having a realistic picture of who you are and becoming oblivious to self

Christian Character

2 Peter 1:1-7 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

We all get saved the same way—BY FAITH (v. 1—“obtained like precious faith”).
Faith is believing and depending on what God has said in His word. I’m a sinner. As a sinner, I deserve to go to hell. Wages of sin is death. Jesus is God coming to earth in human flesh. He lived a perfect life. He loved me and died for sins on the cross. He became my substitute. He was buried and arose from the dead. He has ascended to the right hand of the Father. He will save whosoever comes to Him in faith for salvation. 1972. I made a decision to trust Him to save me based on what the Bible said—Not based on a tingle, a feeling, or any works I have done. God saved me by His grace through FAITH. I became partaker of the divine nature (v. 4). God has become part of me. I’m a new creature since I placed my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

For the Christian, everything starts with faith because without faith it is impossible to please God and whatsoever is not of faith is sin. Faith in Christ is the foundation upon which everything else is built in the Christian life (v. 5).
But faith is not the end of it (v. 5—“And beside this…”). After faith, I am exhorted to develop Christian character in my life (vs. 5-7).

The EXHORTATION to Christian character (v. 5).

Difference between character in general and Christian character. There are unsaved people who have a degree of moral integrity. However, Christian character is built upon faith in God (v. 5).

A. Responsibility to develop.

Not born with character. You are born without any character. Not automatic! Character is a matter of training and discipline. Parents begin the process of molding character into their children’s lives (Prov. 22:6).
If you are going to pour concrete, the first thing you do is set the form. Once the form is in place and secure, then you pour that pliable, moldable concrete into the form. If you keep it in the form long enough, it will set up in the shape you intended for it to take. If you take the form away too soon, it will take its own form.
A parent must determine ahead of time what form is right for his child. This involves setting boundaries and restraints whereby a child is formed and molded. There is liberty, but within the boundaries of the form.
They must be kept in the form until they are set, so that when the form is removed they will not depart from those character traits formed within the mold.

B. Requirement of diligence (v. 5).

Diligence means “given priority; zealous; focused, decisive, careful.” The opposite of diligence is casual, haphazardness, careless, sloppy.

ILLUS—Going to the hospital for surgery. How careful do you want the surgeon to be when he uses his scalpel? You want him to give ALL DILIGENCE! You want him to give his most earnest attention. You want him focused, alert and undistracted! You do NOT want him cutting on you in a casual haphazard way!

Problem with Christians is they are TOO CASUAL and CARELESS in their Christian life. (Casual in giving; careless in church attendance; and behavior).

It is almost impossible to develop Christian character in a person who does not have character in general (2 Tim. 2:2). Paul told Timothy do make disciples out of FAITHFUL MEN. Why? Because you cannot disciple an unfaithful man! A person unfaithful coming to church and studying his Bible will never develop Christian character!

DON’T BE A BABY

1 Cor 3:1-3
Scientifically a baby is from 0 to 2 yrs old - to be a baby- but not necessarily so! According to my mamas and daddys will will ALWAYS have our babies!
Your age does not necessairyl detrmine your maturity.

Gatlinburg At GUINESS BOOK Heaviest Birth--- The heaviest baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 22 lb 8 oz who was born in Aversa, Italy in September 1955.
---- but I have seen some much BIGGER BABIES!
I measured myself at 3 places still 5' 10" I haven't grown an inch taller since I was 14. I have grown more than a few inches around though! Over 8"

And I have grown heavier!
I have grown grown stronger-
I've grown smarter-
I've grown wiser- a little at least-
I've grown more patient-
grown weary of certain things that used to interest me
grown used to some things that were before difficult
My wife has grown better looking-

Growth is the goal of the Christian. Maturity is mandatory for every child of God. When a Christian stops growing he starts backsliding; you never stay the same. If you are the same Christian today that you were a year ago, you are not the Christian that you ought to be..

Growth is God's method. We must all grow- even Jesus grew. JESUS CHRIST Is described as growing "in wisdom, and stature, and in favor with God and man" (Luke 2: 52).That is the way we should grow. It is 4 dimensional growth:Intellectual, Physical, Spiritual, & Social. HE GREW INTELLECTUALLY - wisdom…..HE GREW PHYSICALLY - stature…HE GREW SPIRITUALLY - favor with God….HE GREW SOCIALLY - favor with man

Does your spiritual maturity correspond to your chronological age in Christ? Are you a stunted saint?

Perfect means mature- where it should be. A perfect 10 is not absolutely perfect-but close as it can be. Bible uses term correctly. A consistent Christian character!
It is a BIG subject of the New Testament! Peter, James and Paul all have a lot to say about it.

No matter how long we have been saved, we still need to continue growing….God wants you to grow up. Your Heavenly Father's goal is for you to mature and to become more like Jesus everyday. Instead millions grow older , but they never grow up.

Bus Ministry

This list was found in my files while I was reading up on the bus ministry. We bought a 15 passenger van on Thursday and I spent the day getting it licensed and insured. Then yesterday I spent 3 hours taking the old vinyl lettering off of the sides and back getting it ready to put our church's new logo and information. We are hoping to get it ready for us to start using by the 18th of Oct to bring children in. I am excited about starting this new ministry and believe it will be a great blessing to our church. I will post some pictures of the van later.

Over the last several weeks I have been reading through the many books and pamphlets I have in my library about the bus ministry. I was hoping to learn a bit more about the philosophy and practical side of this exciting ministry. I was saved as a 12 year old boy through a bus/van ministry while living in Hawaii in 1972. We are praying that with our Bus Ministry will see many young people saved and families reached with the gospel.

12 Basic Laws of Church Bus Evangelism

1. The size of the church has no bearing upon the effectiveness of the church bus evangelism.
2. The location of the church (rural, small town, residential, suburban, downtown, or urban) has no bearing upon the effectiveness of church bus evangelism.
3. The age of the church has no bearing upon the effectiveness of church bus evangelism.
4. The population density of the area has very little relationship, for all practical purposes, upon the effectiveness of church bus evangelism (except in the desolate mountains and deserts of the west).
5. The income level of the area has no bearing upon the effectiveness of church bus evangelism. The response in the low income area, the middle income area, and the upper income area will be about the same if the proper procedures are followed.
6. The racial or ethnic characteristics of the community have no bearing upon the effectiveness of church bus evangelism.
7. Children do not think like adults. And adults must consider the thought pattern of children in order to be effective with them. For example, most adults are "turned off" at the thoughts of riding a bus to church but children love it. Most adults are "turned off" at the thoughts of riding an hour to church but children love it. They enjoy bus ride with friends!
8. Children like to go places-almost any place-and especially with other children. Most children do not have any place to go on Sunday mornings. Most children like riding buses, contests, awards, treats, socials, attention, activities, singing, and other such things.
9. The number of hours the bus workers spend visiting each Saturday determines the success or failure of church bus evangelism. The Sunday results are won or lost by sundown Saturday.
10. Many people will respond to God's love when they see it manifested in the lives of the church members every week.
11. The number of people attending any church and being baptized by any church is determined primarily by the attitude of the pastor and the church leaders-not by the buildings, the location, or the number of people in the community.
12. Change and growth go hand-in-hand. The church that never changes will never grow in a significant way. All changes do not produce growth but all significant growth must be accompanied by appropriate changes.

“The Gates”

I did an extensive series on the gates some years ago entitled “The Gates” from Nehemiah chapter three. Here is a listing of the gates and the application that I made for them.

1. Sheep Gate (verse 1) speaks to us of Calvary (John 3:16)
2. Fish Gate (verse 3) speaks to us of converts (Matt. 4:19)
3. Old Gate (Verse 6) speaks to us of consistency (Jer. 6:16, Jude 3)
4. Valley Gate (verse 13) speaks to us of condescension (Prov. 16:18)
5.. Dung Gate (verse 114) speaks to us of cleansing (II Cor. 7:1)
6. Fountain Gate (verse 15) speaks to us of (The) Comforter (Jn. 7:37-38)
7. Water Gate (verse 26) speaks to us of (The) Canon (Jn. 15:3)
8. Horse Gate (verse 29) speaks to us of Combat (II Tim. 2:3)
9. East Gate (verse 29) speaks to us of (His) Coming (II Thess. 14:13-18)
10. Miphkad Gate (verse 31) speaks to us of (Our Day In) Court (II Cor. 5:10)

FREE

I am free from failure for "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." Phil.4:13

I am free from want for "my God shall supply all my need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" Phil:4:19
